The Renaissance Kingdoms is a game about power and ambition. You are placed in a community of
players -a small village- and you aim at rising in the world, becoming more and more affluent and
gaining influence but also remaining high in the esteem of your fellow citizens. It takes a subtle sense
of balancing friendship and betrayal, hard work and compromise, to become rich and powerful, and
even maybe the unchallenged leader of a realm of several thousand souls…
You will then have to prove yourself both affable and virtuous while being sly and merciless at the
same time.
A Role Playing Game
The Renaissance Kingdoms is basically a role playing game. You play the role of a character that has a
specific profile (in terms of strength, intelligence, charisma) which evolves in the course of the game.
Some daily variable elements come as a complement to this profile: hunger, happiness and reputation.
Each character also has a personal list of items (My Items) so that he / she can store the goods he /
she has made or bought from the market, and which can help him / her to improve his / her profile..
A Game about Managing
The Renaissance Kingdoms is also a game about managing. Your character starts off almost
penniless, a complete stranger in the village. As he / she climbs up the different levels, he / she will
acquire properties, fields, estates, houses and shops which require skilful management if you want to
see them thrive. He / she also has to try and integrate the life of his community, get involved in the
running of his village, in order to influence the political and economical decisions that will be made
there. You also have to care for your character’s health and make sure he / she does not die from
starvation, while allowing him / her to develop a coherent profile.
A Strategy Game
Lastly, The Kingdoms is a game about strategy and diplomacy. You will have to set yourself apart
from your peers if you want to reach the top. This can be achieved through slyness, charisma, money
or even strength. Various ways can be used: you may try and convince your friends to follow you in a
furious revolution or you may, in a more roundabout way, attempt to influence political decisions with
money or through lobbying. You may even shamelessly collaborate with those who hold power in
order to get yourself a (fair?) share of the cake.
